Now that God has created the light and darkness, he spends a couple more days on preparing the earth for all the good things that he intends to put on it.
Let there be a dome to divide the water and to keep it in two separate places (v 6)
In each of the different creations we look at; God’s command is immediately followed by “and it was done” Following the command for the dome to be created, he made the dome and separated the water under it from the water above it. He then names it “Sky”. Again as we see God naming it signifies that he has dominion over it. This sky as a physical object is not visible to us – but we can see the atmosphere around us which gives us our impression of sky – a layer of oxygen, water and other gasses which we need to survive.
In the book of Job chapter 37 v 18 the sky is described as being as hard as polished metal (or a mirror of cast bronze)
Isaiah describes it as a curtain, a canopy, a tent in which to live (chapter 40 v 22) This is our layer of protection – we now know that any object which tries to break through is burned up in the process.
I’ve begun to notice that in the account of creation, at the end of each event we have;
Evening passed and morning came – that was the second day
Now we currently record our days as beginning at midnight through to midnight but the Jews regard their days as beginning at sunset (usually around 6pm in Jerusalem) so this is obviously where this traditional view comes from.
Once the waters of the earth and sky have been separated and made, God moves on to continue preparing the earth.
Let the water below the sky come together in one place so that land will appear (v 9)
He then names the land “Earth” and the water “Sea”. Peter writes in 2 Peter 3 v 5-6;
The earth was formed out of water and by water, and it was also by water, the water of the flood that the old world was destroyed
He set boundaries over the seas that they must not cross (Psalm 104 v 9) when he promised Noah that the earth will never be flooded again.
In Jeremiah 5 v 22 God is warning his people, he says;
Why don’t you fear me? Why don’t you tremble before me? I placed the sand as the boundary of the sea, a permanent boundary that it cannot cross. The sea may toss, but it cannot go beyond it; the waves may roar, but they cannot break through
It seems to me as though God is saying “Haven’t you learned through what has happened before? It is my command that is holding the waters back just as it was my command which released them in Noah’s day.
Although we name our planet “Earth”, in the bible earth refers to the land which is separated from the sea.
Day 3 is a busy day as he then commands the earth to produce all kinds of plants bearing grain and fruit thus making the earth ready for the animals and people that he intends to populate it with. He has it all planned out
The earth is now ready; beautiful with lush green vegetation, fruit and grains ready as food for his intended creation. So by the end of the third day the earth is created.
